Last scheduled zoom sessions

Tonight (Wednesday April 28th)

we will have a Module One focus zoom session - 8pm (UK time)

Please make every effort to attend to be a part of discussions around the synthesis of information through reflection in relation to your essays for DAN4510. A reminder that if you intend to send in a draft of this essay for feedback, this should be with your supervisor by Friday this week, beyond this there will not be time to get feedback to you and for you to develop your work in a meaningful way.

On Sunday May 2nd we have our last Open discussion group at 8pm (UK time)

Will will set the agenda for this session through what you want to discuss so do come having given some thought the areas that would be useful to have a discussion about in relation to your practice/study/communicating your work through assessment. This will be the last space together this term so be prepared to co-create it with things that are meaningful and productive for you! It would be great if you can leave a comment below saying what you want to talk about and we can build from there!

Extension to submission deadline

Some of you have spoken about requesting, or we have suggested you request an extension on the deadline date for submitting your work this term. There is no penalty (grade or fee-wise) for doing this and you do not need to provide evidence of you reasons why (during this pandemic reasons are complex, simple or just because life is not really what we have known before).

You do need to request an extension via unihub for it to be registered after agreeing this with your supervisor.

Please use this link to do so:

https://unihub.mdx.ac.uk/study/assessment/extenuating-circumstances

To note: the scheduled deadline for submission this term for all work across all modules is May 14th, 2021

The extension is for 2 weeks, so your new submission date would be May 28th.

If you are in Module Three your oral presentations will take place just before this and you should aim to present your work on time with your peers and follow with your submission of the essay by the May 28 date.

Beyond this you must request a deferral of your submission, which would give you to the next assessment point next term - Dec 2021.

Drafts and feedback

A reminder on the purpose of draft work and the role of feedback...

Drafts are intended to initiate a feedback dialogue with your supervisor, they are not usefully used to ask if things are 'right' or sent with an expectation of receiving corrections, by way of a pre-marking opportunity. At this point in the term, please do receive feedback as an extended discussion of your work for you to have with yourself.

Often feedback contains prompts for further reading, suggested texts/practitioners to look at, comments regarding the level of critical thinking/analysis in your writing over overly descriptive personal narrative approaches etc.. Feedback comments are not telling you to 'correct' something and re-submit, but more trying to help you to move your thinking and writing on as we see the process of your work developmentally.

With this in mind, when you have received feedback on a draft of work, please take time to read and consider comments made, come back to your supervisor if you need further clarity, but please not to send a 2nd draft asking if the work is now correct, or continuous re-drafts up until the submission date. Trust yourself to work independently to develop the work for submission.

If you miss the last date for sending a draft to your supervisor please do not anticipate feedback on it without a conversation with your supervisor.

To note: Adesola's students you are still to work with Angela Woodhouse for drafts and feedback this term

Literature

On Monday we had a good discussion around the use, value, place and role of literature with a focus on how this is located and used in module one and two particularly.

Frank offered some interesting conceptual thinking that has arisen from reflecting on practice in the creative industries, these concepts 'empathy, inspiration, engagement' offer us examples of where to go next with reading and resources in order to contextualise our thinking and develop the articulation of this in writing.

Natasha shared her process of actively seeking resources through reaching out to people and organisations around the areas she has been looking into.

There were some good conversations around 'too much literature', making choices and the need to acknowledge and respect the work of those you are engaging with through literature, moving beyond a culture of 'quote grabbing' to 'back up' or affirm your own ideas.

Think of literature in a broad sense (articles, videos, interviews, published art work as well as books) as a way of engaging with and learning from the work of others. Give respect to the work of those that have gone before you, those working around and across your field of practice. Look at how you are a part of this journey. What are your thoughts in relation to those of others? How might you see your own practice differently, more deeply from another perspective. Remind yourself not to get trapped into a single story by only reading and engaging with work that supports, is aligned with, comes from the same perspective as your own. Use literature to learn.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts through your own blogs on this..
