Today we had a skype discussion with a Module One focus which generated discussions around knowledge, learning, and information. Conversations were rich in unpacking these constructs individually as well as beginning to see and importantly to question their relationship with each other, with you, wth your practice.
Those that were a part of this call, please do share further your thoughts and notes around this and thinking further as to how this discussion feels relevant to your learning-practice and the relationships between these.
We talked about the idea of things being in relationship with each other, not necessarily a linear progression from one to another. This image of a constellation maybe helps as a reminder of this.
What are your thoughts?
Visually, a constellation looks like a choir of elements connected to each others, yet keeping their individual characteristics as a separate entity. Think of a class of pupils, for example.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to associate ONE meaning to a word, whereas one person can filter it through the filters of his/her own life experience. Through studying contemporary dance and investigating into somatic approaches to dance I have discovered you can actually describe what you experience through movement and find your own language to honestly name it for what it is for you, beyond conventional definitions. Taking part to various creative workshops and meeting people from different fields, has taught to me learning is a process of building, destroying your assumptions, questioning your previous learning, re-building again. Learning can be an ongoing flux, a growing process. Its growth depends on the ability to be open to new information. I have found knowledge is temporary, although sometimes it can reassure you as a learner, since it can be replaced by new acquisition and experiences. Doing is a fundamental part of growing because it can either reinforce the information you received or helping you draw out conclusions for the time being, until when you find out something else or more valuable for your benefit. Learning, Knowledge, Information, Doing, they all complement each other. I will write more on my blog.

Hi:) I would like to reflect last night's interesting session regarding seeing Practice and myself and discussions around learning, knowledge and information. I will say something from my perspective and long experience as a mover, dancer, teacher and observer. From my point of view i would say knowledge refers to the some point of awareness and understanding on the subject acquired from learning (studying, experience) of a person. Information we could see as cultivated form of data which is helpful to understand the meaning knowledge or skills (which could come before or after learning, such as receiving informations)is the relevant and objective informations that helps in drawing conclusions. So i see this three things as a wholeness of different shapes which through the phases becomes one thing, oneness (like i thing something Elliot also added). Those parts are full, intertwined and connected and i would just add and related to the first thing we started and that is how we see our practice and Self. Without experience, awareness or clarification of data we can not collect those isolated particles and being reflective about ourselves and the practice. Agree with Paola that all three things they all complement each other, if we remove one from life, than we are suffering lack of understanding, either objectivity, or education (experience). I will add those thoughts also on my blog. It was good to see you all there:)
ReplyDeleteInitially, I thought that there was a linear way to learning, but after taking a moment to think about it more deeply, I can see that actually it is more like a constellation which we move around without a direct path. this allows us to gain new perspective and develop a greater understanding to ass to our knowledge.
ReplyDeletePlus the idea that everyone views this differently. There are so many ways in which we create our own knowledge. Although these concepts are stand alone entities, they are interwoven in different patterns from person to person.
I think we never stop learning. We are always gathering new information to inform our developing knowledge through experiences and learning.
